onlinedevelopment.com - monetization of websites
Monetizing domain names and monetizing websites is key for the web developer and publisher. Making your name portfolio or site network generate revenue is crucial for the longevity of the site and establishes one or more revenue streams for the developer and publisher. There are many methods of monetizing a website or domain name and many more to come in the future. Much depends on the type of website and to an extent who it is targeted to reach and how.
By far the quickest and easiest method of monetization of websites is by incorporating Google Adsense(tm) ads. A publisher simply signs up, logs into their account, selects the style and size of ads to serve, generates code and pastes the snippet of code into the site code. When a visitor hits the website google servesup an ad based upon your keywords on that page.
Usually a semi relevant (to keywords and content) ad is displayed. If the visitor clicks through a paid advertiser ad listing the publisher makes a click thru rate based upon the bid price of that keyword, equating from usually a few cents to several dollars. A site with minimal traffic should be able to at least cover the domain name registration at the end of a year.
Based upon running ad sense across about a hundred sites it will cover the names and hosting at developer level server pricing. Based upon new sites not properly submitted and zero advertising besides cross linking, about 50% of sites will generate enough revenue each to pay their way. About 25% will not generate any revenue, 25% generate some revenue, 25% generate enough revenue, and the top 25% generate more than enough revenue and carry the non-profitable sites. Negating development time and design the average per site was between 10 and 15 dollars per site/per year. So don't get delusions of grandeur thinking that you are going to retire from this method of monetization, but it should cover the bills based on the model presented. With a large number of pages, high priced keywords, a little targeted advertising, good traffic and relevant ads served up, it is possible to see hundreds of dollars a year from one good site. Unfortunately it is fair to mention it is possible to funnel thousands of qualified visitors through a low bid keyword site and barely cover its cost. So the important thing to consider is keyword price (and it fluctuates as a factor of bidding by Google Adwords(tm) advertisers) and traffic. Low end is about 3 cents a click so do the math you need a lot of clicks, like 4000 to hit $12 that is 300 clicks a month. If you are seeing $1 a click which is high but not uncommon you need 12 clicks to make $12/yr, one click a month, if you had the 4000 clicks at a buck a click then that would be $4000/year. Now in my eyes, $4000 looks better than $12. I found larger sites (more than 5 pgs seem to work better than small one page or 2 page sites and have a better chance of getting indexed in search engines etc. So if done properly google adsense implementation will probably cover the bills of a site and if done optimally could be a great revenue stream for your site or site network for years to come.
